Barnaby Marder
Barnaby Marder is a market research professional who is retiring later this year, and a professional musician. He comes from a secular Jewish background, though he grew up in a kosher home in London out of respect for his Orthodox grandmother.
Politically, Barnaby has been active in the Labour Party since 1977 and has held a number of offices at local level. For many years he was associated with the factional left, and he was supported by left-wing members in his narrowly unsuccessful attempt to win the Labour nomination to stand for parliament in a 2016 by-election.
Over time, Barnaby became increasingly concerned about rising antisemitism within parts of the left. In 2018 he co-founded Socialists Against Antisemitism (SAAS) with a group of like-minded people, both Jewish and non-Jewish. Through SAAS he has helped create and deliver talks on antisemitism and has met with many political figures, pressing for more serious engagement and more credible responses to antisemitism on the left.
Alongside his political work, Barnaby continues his career in music, performing professionally and remaining active as a working musician.
